Privacy Policy
Effective date: July 8, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how Tango collects, uses, discloses, and protects personal information when you use our mobile application, website, lessons, speech features, subscriptions, and related services.
Tango is designed for language practice. Because voice learning can involve audio, transcripts, learning goals, and progress data, this policy explains those categories directly.
1. Personal Information We Collect
Depending on how you use Tango, we may collect the following categories of information:
- Account information, such as your name, email address, sign-in method, user ID, account settings, and authentication records.
- Learning profile information, such as your native language, target language, proficiency level, learning goals, lesson choices, vocabulary, streaks, progress, and reminder preferences.
- Voice and lesson information, such as speech audio, transcripts, pronunciation attempts, conversation turns, AI tutor messages, lesson feedback, and practice history.
- Inferences and personalization information, such as lesson recommendations, progress estimates, proficiency signals, and practice patterns derived from your use of Tango.
- Purchase information, such as subscription status, product identifiers, renewal state, trial eligibility, and transaction metadata. We do not receive your full payment card number from Apple.
- Device and usage information, such as device type, operating system, app version, language settings, approximate region, IP address, logs, diagnostics, crash data, feature usage, and timestamps.
- Communications, such as support messages, feedback, survey responses, and other information you choose to send us.
Personal information does not include data that has been aggregated or deidentified so that it no longer reasonably identifies you.
We do not ask you to provide government identifiers, financial account numbers, health information, precise location, biometric identifiers, or other highly sensitive information for ordinary language practice. If you choose to include sensitive information in a conversation, support request, or lesson response, we may process it as part of that feature.
2. How We Collect Information
We collect information directly from you, automatically from your device and use of Tango, and from third parties such as app stores, authentication providers, subscription providers, hosting providers, analytics providers, speech providers, and AI service providers.
3. Cookies, Device Identifiers, and Analytics
Tango may use cookies, local storage, device identifiers, software development kits, server logs, and similar technologies to keep you signed in, remember preferences, measure performance, diagnose issues, prevent abuse, understand feature usage, and improve the service.
Browser settings and device settings may let you limit certain technologies. Some limits may affect whether Tango works correctly. Tango does not currently respond to browser Do Not Track signals.
4. How We Use Personal Information
We use personal information to:
- Provide, personalize, maintain, and improve Tango.
- Run lessons, voice conversations, speech recognition, pronunciation feedback, and AI-assisted tutor features.
- Create and maintain your account, learning profile, vocabulary, progress, and preferences.
- Process subscriptions, verify purchase status, manage access to paid features, and provide customer support.
- Send service messages, reminders, security alerts, policy updates, and support responses.
- Analyze performance, fix bugs, improve safety, improve lesson quality, prevent fraud, enforce our terms, and protect Tango and users.
- Create aggregated or deidentified information for product, research, analytics, safety, and business purposes.
- Comply with legal obligations and respond to lawful requests.
5. Voice, Audio, Transcripts, and AI Processing
Tango may process your speech audio and transcripts to provide voice lessons, tutor conversations, pronunciation assessment, feedback, and related learning features. This processing may be performed by Tango and by vendors that provide speech recognition, text-to-speech, hosting, AI, analytics, diagnostics, and similar services.
When you enable microphone access or use a voice feature, you consent to the capture and processing of speech audio and related technical information needed to provide that feature. You can revoke microphone access through your device settings, but voice features may not work without it.
You should not include unnecessary sensitive information in practice conversations. Automated systems may generate or interpret content incorrectly, and lesson content should not be treated as professional advice.
6. How We Disclose Personal Information
We may disclose personal information in the following ways:
- Service providers and processors. We disclose information to vendors that help us operate Tango, including hosting, databases, authentication, analytics, diagnostics, subscriptions, support, speech, AI, and security providers.
- App stores and payment providers. We disclose or receive purchase and subscription information as needed to process purchases, verify entitlements, and manage refunds or support requests.
- Legal and safety reasons. We may disclose information when we believe it is necessary to comply with law, enforce our terms, protect rights, investigate fraud or abuse, or protect the safety and security of Tango, users, or others.
- Business transfers. If Tango is involved in a merger, financing, acquisition, reorganization, bankruptcy, or sale of assets, information may be disclosed or transferred as part of that transaction.
- With your direction or consent. We may disclose information when you ask us to or when you otherwise consent.
We do not sell personal information, and we do not share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising as those terms are commonly used under California privacy law.
We require service providers that process personal information for us to use it only for authorized purposes and to provide privacy and security protections appropriate to the nature of the information.
7. Retention
We keep personal information for as long as reasonably necessary to provide Tango, maintain your account, comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, enforce agreements, protect security, and support legitimate business needs. Retention periods vary based on the type of information, your settings, whether your account is active, and legal or operational requirements.
If you request deletion, we will delete or deidentify personal information unless we need to keep it for lawful reasons, such as security, fraud prevention, accounting, legal compliance, dispute resolution, backups, or enforcement of our terms. Backup copies may persist for a limited period before being overwritten.
8. Deidentified and Aggregated Information
We may create, use, disclose, and retain aggregated, anonymized, or deidentified information for any lawful purpose, including analytics, product improvement, research, safety, and business planning. We will not attempt to reidentify deidentified information except as permitted by law, such as to test whether deidentification measures are effective.
9. Your Choices and Controls
You may have the following choices depending on your location and how you use Tango:
- Update certain account, profile, language, reminder, and learning preferences in the app.
- Control microphone, notification, and other device permissions through your device settings.
- Cancel app store subscriptions through your Apple Account subscription settings.
- Request access, correction, deletion, or export of personal information by contacting us.
- Withdraw consent where processing is based on consent, subject to legal and technical limits.
- Opt out of non-essential marketing communications if we send them.
Deleting the app from your device does not delete all account data and does not cancel an active app store subscription.
If you revoke consent or disable permissions, some features may stop working. We may still process information when another legal basis applies, such as providing the service, security, fraud prevention, legal compliance, or legitimate business needs.
10. U.S. State Privacy Rights
Depending on where you live, including if you are a California resident, you may have rights to know or access the personal information we collect, correct inaccurate information, delete information, receive a portable copy of information, opt out of sales, sharing, targeted advertising, or certain profiling, limit certain use of sensitive personal information, and appeal a decision about a privacy request.
We will not discriminate against you for exercising privacy rights. To submit a request, contact us using the information below. We may need to verify your identity before completing a request. Authorized agents may submit requests where permitted by law, and we may require proof of authorization.
We may deny, limit, or charge for requests where permitted by law, such as if a request is unverifiable, excessive, repetitive, conflicts with legal obligations, risks another person privacy, or asks us to reveal security-sensitive information.
11. EEA, UK, and Similar Privacy Rights
If privacy laws such as the GDPR or UK GDPR apply, our legal bases for processing may include providing the service and performing our contract with you, your consent, compliance with legal obligations, and our legitimate interests such as improving Tango, preventing fraud, securing the service, and supporting users.
You may have rights to access, correct, delete, restrict, object to, or port your personal information, and to withdraw consent where processing is based on consent. You may also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
12. Children
Tango is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided personal information to Tango, contact us so we can take appropriate action. Users under the age of majority must use Tango only with permission and supervision from a parent or legal guardian.
13. Security
We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational measures designed to protect personal information. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
You are responsible for keeping your account credentials secure and for using a device and network that you trust. If we learn of a security incident requiring notice, we will provide notice as required by applicable law.
14. International Transfers
Tango and its service providers may process personal information in the United States and other countries that may have privacy laws different from those where you live. Where required, we use appropriate safeguards for international transfers.
15. Third-Party Links and Services
Tango may link to or integrate with third-party services such as app stores, authentication providers, payment providers, AI providers, or support tools. Their privacy practices are governed by their own policies, not this Privacy Policy.
16. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If changes are material, we will take reasonable steps to notify you, such as by posting the updated policy, updating the effective date, or providing in-app notice. Your continued use of Tango after an updated policy takes effect means the updated policy applies.
17. Contact
To ask questions or submit privacy requests, contact us at support@learnwithtango.com. If this address changes, we will publish the updated contact method in the app or on this website.
